Solidworks creates 3 types of files depending on the work you are doing - Making parts, Assembling them or Preparing drawings. Each type can be distinguished from other two by its own extension added to file names as follows:
- *.SLDPRT : part
- *.SLDASM : assembly
- *.SLDDRW : drawing
However, the default settings of Windows 7 hide the extensions so you need to unlock the seal by doing just a few steps described below.
1. Press Windows key.
2. Type Folder Options in the Search programs and files field and click the top one having the exactly same name as you typed in.
3. Change options as seen below. Make sure Hide extensions for known files left unselected and Click OK.
4. That's it. Now compare before and after.
